In January the Group were entertained again by Susan and her father Neville with their continued story of the history of the vicars of Marton. The slides from this talk are at this link.

There is no meeting in the hall in February, instead those that have booked up are going to be guided by Sheila Woolf on a tour of Stoneleigh. There are still some places available: let David know if you are interested. David will also coordinate lifts if you get in contact with him.

The next meeting in the hall is on 26^th March when group members are giving a talk about the village chapel. All welcome, entrance fee £3, includes a glass of wine.

The well-attended November meeting were engrossed by a talk by David Morse (pictured) about the history of the local Home Guard. A brief summary of his talk is at this link.

There is no meeting in December. The next meeting is on 29^th January when Susan will give the second episode of her talk about the vicars of Marton.

The new season got off to a good start with a well-attended meeting in which a talk was given about the history of Meadow Bank in the Chapel End section of High Street. The house history information from the meeting, including the memories of those present, has been added to the History section of the village website.

The next meeting is on November 27^th where a talk will be given by an external speaker, David Morse, about the history of the local Home Guard. All welcome, entrance fee £3, includes a glass of wine.

The new season opens on Monday 30th October at 7.30pm in the village hall. At this meeting there will be a talk about the history of some of the properties at the Chapel End section of High Street, based on Tim Foden’s investigations into this area. In March Sheila Woolf (pictured) gave the Group a talk about Cordelia Leigh. A summary of this talk is given below.

The next meeting is on 24^th April at 7.30pm in the village hall. This is the AGM at which plans for the next season will be discussed. This will be followed by a talk by Group members about the Marton village building plans between 1900 and 1940, giving an insight to how the village developed during this period. All welcome, entrance is free and still includes a glass of wine!

There is no meeting in December. The next meeting is on 30th January 2017 at 7.30pm in the village hall, when a talk will be given about the history of the village vicars, curates and vicarages.

The October talk was about Marton farm labourers emigrating to New Zealand in 1874 (one of the emigrants is pictured left). A summary of the talk is given at this link. (On the village website there is also an article about Marton, New Zealand).

The next meeting is on Monday 28th November at 7.30pm. This will feature a much-illustrated talk by David Fry about “Fred Hancox: An Exceptional Edwardian Amateur Photographer”. All welcome, entrance fee £3 includes a glass of wine.

Please note the change in the planned talk when the Group meetings restart on Monday 31st October. The History of Marton’s Old Houses has been postponed. Instead the talk originally planned for November will be given, namely: Marton Farm Labourers’ 1874 Mass Emigration to New Zealand. This talk looks into how the worsening conditions for farm labourers in the 19th century led to many of them emigrating, and why the New Zealand government were prepared to give free passage to hundreds of thousands of emigrants in the 1870s. (You may even find out a bit about Marton, New Zealand!).
