Marton Village, Warwickshire

Local History Group: December 2016 Update

david_1008In November David Fry (pictured left) gave a fascinating talk about the work of an early Coventry photographer; a brief summary is given below.

There is no meeting in December. The next meeting is on 30th January 2017 at 7.30pm in the village hall, when a talk will be given about the history of the village vicars, curates and vicarages.

David’s talk was about Frederick Hancox (1876-1966) and the collection of glass plate photographs he took of the Warwickshire area. The plates were found 25 years ago when a builder was clearing out an old house in Earlsdon and David has converted many of them to digital photos. Fred appears in many of the photos so he probably had some form of timer on the shutter release. As well as recording family shots Fred also took photos of events that occurred in the Coventry area. Overall, the photos provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of ordinary working people in the early 20th century; some example are given below.
